Final Project: Magazine Layout

For the final project I had to interview a international faculty member at Columbia College Chicago. My interviewee name is Sigita Sulaityte and she is from the capital of Lithuania. The story she told me was about her childhood/college memories she had growing up as a artist. The picture that is on my layout isn't the picture of Sigita because she wouldn't let me take a photo of her and I received no photos from her. Sigita took this semester off and has been living in Houston so maybe that is why she couldn't send pictures.

I tried to make the layout similar to other magazine layouts, by making things centered to take up some of the white space.

My map shows the major cities surrounded in Lithuania and also the three other Baltic States (Lithuania is one of them).

My layout isn't the best because I don't have original photos, but I tried. Visit Sigita website to view some of her artwork, click here

Webpage Midterm Design

For my midterm project, we had to design a web page design describing something and adding photos that we toned in Photoshop. I decided to do my web page on the "Smoke-Free" policy for Columbia College Chicago. I notice that there is a good amount of students at Columbia who smoke cigarettes and there are signs in each building stating to "Smoke outside".

My web page has pictures of students smoking, cigarettes on the ground and a smoking sign located in one of Columbia building's. I also placed a Facebook/Twitter logo since social media is a emerging to everything online and put an ad relating to health.

Restore and tone old picture

Bisbuela

This is an old picture that I had to restore and tone areas that were missing and spots that needed color added.
Here is the finished picture that I restored in photoshop. I cropped the top part of the photo in the upper right corner and filled the space in with the color surrounded around it. I filled the remaining spaces in the background with the same color it and brighten some spots that were fading brown. I restored the blouse color and made some areas brighter then before and filled in holes and fading colors.

I brightened Bisbuela face and used the smudge tool to blend the color of her face. I also brighten the area under her eyebrows to make her eyebrows stand out and bring out and add depth to them.

Also with this project I learned how to make photos in photoshop ready for print(CMYK) and online(RGB) content.

Infographic Food Chart

The ten states with the deadliest eating habits

This is a table chart of the 10 states with the deadliest eating habits from a Yahoo Finance Report. The chart is broken up into how many grocery stores per residents to the number of pounds of sweets per capita.

I choose the chart as the graphic to use because it was the best way to incorporate all of the information into a table. Instead of putting the state as a picture I chose the welcome signs for each state and created the boxes around it.

It took me a while to make my boxes the exact size same size and to have enough room to write my text. After a couple of tries experimenting with the line tool and the hand tool to move images, I created this chart.

Composition print layout

For this project we had to copy a print layout as close as possible to the original. I enjoyed doing this project because I got to use different functions such as the change in type face and the position tool to show pictures up close.
I feel that my composition was similar to the original one in some ways, but I didn't know how to add captions inside the pictures as small as the magazine had it.

Warm colors

This project is similar to the cool color piece but instead I'm using warm colors such as: yellow, green and red. Also, this composition isn't busy compared to my other 2 projects. I didn't want it to busy because of the colors I chose and since I wanted the tone to be mellow.
I changed the percentage of colors that I wanted to use to make them more dark.
The tone of this design is very peaceful because the colors aren't too loud or pop out.The placement of the shapes were placed in no specific order, but to see the percentage change with the colors.

Cool Colors

So far out of the three projects we have done so far in class with InDesign this is my favorite one. It's nothing special, but it shows a difference from my black and white composition, and shows that I'm starting to understand some of the functions. I love the tone of this piece because I used more cool colors and the colors call attention to a specific object.

We learned the difference between CMYK and RGB colors for visual qualities and elements. I learned that CMYK colors are for print and all colors mixed results into black. Also, RGB colors are for online processing and all 3 colors mixed will result in white.

This piece we had to use cool colors which are colors such as: Green, Blue and Pink. I used these 3 main colors but changed the percentage of the colors to make the color more cool. I played around with the swatches tab and also with the thickness of the border around objects.

The focal point of this is the pink square with the yellow border. All the objects that lay on top or in back of that shape was where I first started. My composition looks more busy due to the colors being added and also me adding more shapes.

Black and White InDesign

The first week of school we got the chance to learn the elements and principles of design dealing with visual journalism. We got the chance to explore with InDesign CS4 and the layout basics of creating something.

This is my first black and white project showing that I used the circle and square frames in making this composition. By choosing these shapes I achieved the task of making my circles a complete circle, and learning how to use both shapes at the same time. I put some shapes behind each other and added a border around some. I like adding borders around my objects because it stands out and it looks more in depth to me. I learned how to change the percentage of the swatches to make the border more bolder.

I learned about the number of pica's to use, gutters, swatches and strokes, and shortcuts to do specific things to the object.
